The host’s remarks, aired days before a shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, triggered a strong response from Melania, who questioned both the content and the role of ABC.
Melania Trump Accuses Kimmel of Crossing the Line with “Hateful and Violent Rhetoric”
The controversy began with a sketch in which Kimmel referred to Melania as “a widow in waiting,” delivered in a satirical tone during a parody of the event.
Her response was immediate:
“Kimmel’s hateful and violent rhetoric aims to divide our country. His monologue about my family is not comedy—his words are corrosive and deepen the political sickness within the United States.”
Melania raised the stakes by questioning the reach and influence of the show, stating that the host “should not have the opportunity to enter people’s homes every night to spread hate.”
She also directly labeled him a “coward” who “hides behind ABC.”
She issued a clear warning to the network: “Enough is enough. It is time for ABC to take a stand.”
She further questioned: “How many more times will ABC leadership allow Kimmel’s outrageous behavior at the expense of our community?”

Context Shifts After Shooting at Correspondents’ Dinner
What might have remained another entertainment dispute took on a different dimension after Saturday’s events.
During the dinner at the Washington Hilton, an armed man entered and fired between five and eight shots before being neutralized by the United States Secret Service.
The attacker was identified as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old from California who carried a shotgun, handgun, and knives.
President Donald Trump, Melania Trump, and other officials were evacuated unharmed.
Melania reportedly raised the alarm and exited the stage on her hands and knees, visibly shaken.
The event, attended by about 2,600 people, was suspended and rescheduled for 30 days later.
Jimmy Kimmel Responds: “It Was Not a Call for Violence”
Following Melania’s reaction and mounting political pressure, Jimmy Kimmel defended his remarks.
“In no way, under any definition, was it a call for assassination, and they know it. I have been very vocal for many years in denouncing gun violence in particular.”
The comedian explained that the joke was meant as a “light jab” related to the age difference between the president and his wife.
During the original monologue, he said: “Our First Lady, Melania, is here. Look at Melania, so beautiful. Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like a widow in waiting.”
